Countdown to Canada 150 Kick-Off Celebration

New Year’s Eve in Regina – Free. Festive. Fun.

2017 marks a milestone event – Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation!  To ensure we celebrate this historic year from beginning to end, Regina is kicking off the New Year celebrations with a free, fun, festive, family event on December 31.

Countdown to Canada’s 150: New Year’s Eve in Regina will welcome revelers with indoor and outdoor activities at the Conexus Arts Centre, Saskatchewan Science Centre and Wascana Centre, beginning at noon, and ending with a spectacular fireworks display at 6 p.m.

“Regina is excited to have the opportunity to host this fun-filled event to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary,” said Regina’s Mayor Michael Fougere. “By featuring local multicultural and Indigenous performances, a DJ dance party, a magician and comedian, how-to-paint sessions, as well as outdoor activities including ice skating, snow decorating and much more - this event offers something for everyone.”

“I am pleased to be joining our province’s capital city in celebration of Canada’s upcoming 150th anniversary in 2017,” Minister Responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Christine Tell said.  “I encourage people all over our province to join us on December 31 to kick off a special year recognizing this significant milestone.”

The City of Regina will provide free transit between the three venues. The Government of Canada is providing $150,000 to the City of Regina through the Canada 150 Fund for its celebrations.

“On December 31, the entire country celebrates! Major festivities will take place in 19 large urban centres to kick off a year of exceptional celebrations,” said the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. “I encourage all Canadians to participate in activities across the country and to be privileged witnesses of this extraordinary day in our country’s history.”

“I invite citizens of Regina to start planning their New Year’s Eve festivities and to join the countless other Canadians to ring in what promises to be a memorable year,” added the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Member of Parliament for Regina-Wascana.
