A major expansion to the Candy Cane Playground in Wascana Centre was officially opened today. A number of new fully accessible elements were added to the area which was originally renovated in 2010.

The new structures were thanks in part to a $20,000 matching grant provided by the Community Initiatives fund. The Community Initiatives Fund supports projects that promote family and community wellbeing throughout the province.

“Outdoor playgrounds encourage physical activity and provide the opportunity for children to connect with nature, which has numerous benefits on their development” says Tracey Mann, Executive Director of the Community Initiatives Fund. “This playground will provide a positive and safe place for children to play which the CIF is happy to support.”

“A rejuvenated and expanded playground area in Candy Cane Park is extremely important for Wascana Centre and the entire community,” explained Wascana Centre Authority CEO Bernadette McIntyre. “This is a very busy and popular area within the Centre and we are very thankful to the Community Initiatives Fund to help us with this project and ensure families throughout the city can enjoy these facilities.”

The Candy Cane Park playground is a full service community playground designed with the latest and greatest in fully accessible playground features. It includes climbing structures and play equipment which cater to a variety of needs and abilities for both younger and older children.
