Residents are reminded to stay off the ice on Wascana Lake and Creek. Although it may look suitable, these ice surfaces are unsafe.

Open ponds of water are visible throughout Wascana Lake. These are the most observable points of danger but the entire lake is a risk. As part of the "Big Dig" Wascana Lake revitalization project, there were powerful under water aeration systems put in place to keep the lake and its water environment alive. These systems are distributed throughout the lake and make the entire surface area vulnerable. From the surface the ice may appear fine, but it could be very thin in certain spots.

Parents should caution their children about the dangers of thin ice and to keep children away from lakes, ditches and creeks.

Anyone walking their dog is asked to keep their pet on a leash. If your dog runs onto the ice, do not attempt to rescue it as you will be putting yourself in danger.

If you see anyone, especially children, playing on the ice or near dangerous water, call the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500.

In an emergency involving people or pets, call 9-1-1.
